5Great Product, Made in USA
By Seeker
I am using this to convert a single speed conversion (originally a multi-gear bike), that we bought used, into a "tingle speed," three front chainrings, one rear sprocket. What is special about this product is that, not only does it make this very simple set-up possible, it is superbly crafted out of aluminum, with clear instructions on how to install it. They recommend their specific single-speed hub, but in my case moving washers around a bit allowed perfect alignment between the rear sprocket and the tensioner. There is a little side-to-side movement built in to the jockey and tension pulleys in the Melvin, so as long as it is close there should be no problems. It should be installed by competent bike mechanic for best results, but I've been working on bicycles for several decades so this wasn't a problem for me.The Melvin, by Paul Components is superior to single pulley products because it affords more chain wrap around the rear sprocket when converting a vertical drop-out bike to a single speed or multi-chainwheel configuration, up to a 20 tooth difference. Plus, it is made in the USA, which is something I'd like to see more of.

5Paul Components Melvin - an elegant, handcrafted altenative to a $12 derailleur
By aephemera
Prior to buying the Melvin, single speed conversion chain tension duties were handled by a fifteen year old Alivio derailleur on my Ibis cross bike. Did it get me there? Yes. Did it do so in style? Not by a longshot. Now I can consider setting up my bike as a dinglespeed, which I just might. Thanks, Paul.

5Effective Mechanical Tension
By Adam Aday
Basically, it's a very solid piece of kit. All the pieces fit exactly together save for the ones designed to shift on purpose, and once installed it doesn't rattle or jiggle around at all. Like an extension of my bike frame. The geometry is such that the whole assembly is compact and very low-profile; the upper jockey cog sits more forward of the freewheel than beneath. Despite the apparent size, the spring exerts pressure sufficient to hold the chain completely taut on all three of my chainrings. Even on my smallest ring, at the lowest level of spring tension, there's no sag at all. No shifting problems, either. I was a little baffled at the very wide teeth on the cogs, which *barely* fit the inner plates of my 3/32 chain, but they seem to grab all the links just fine and they don't make noise. They're also made of aluminum, not plastic, and the bearings are a sealed-cartridge type.Overall I'm definitely satisfied.
