Electric Mistress .. Analog effect bliss

The Electro-Harmonix "Electric Mistress" is a fine, complex analog guitar signal processor built in the retro style. Its well-built, easy to use and understand, and creates sounds that are unlike any other guitar sounds you can imagine. Of course, you can use it to sound like a typical phaser or chorus, but the real beauty of it is that it has a huge array of sounds. I'm not a big signal processor fan .. I'm more about being a great player, but effects can inspire you. I find this one just such a box, though I use it sparingly. I like the Andy Summers sounds you can make with it, either on my acoustic electrics or on my solid bodies. It's cool and realatively inexpensive.My only knock is that I think it should have a battery powered option since the power supply adds another complexity of having to care for it when gig time arrives. I guess it eats batteries if you leave it on all the time so they just give you a power supply.Very creative!

A modern classic

The addition of the chorus effect adds a new twist and makes for a much warmer flange sound. Has a nice wide sweep. Personally, I'm a big fan of the newer more condensed E-H effects - fits a lot better on a pedal board. They're still a touch expensive, but still much cheaper than the boutique stuff.

Sorry, people: this pedal has horrible limitations. While I agree there may be one or two sweet spots, overall the pedal just isn't worth the money. The thin signal breaks up if you play a little fast, a little hard, or simply, with slight distortion. Just to be fair, it was played through multiple guitars and amps, all good quality (USA-made Gibson, Fender, tube and solid-state amps, both direct and fx-loop).If you can get that sweet spot and stay with it, it does have a pretty cool sound, but understand you will always have a slight chorus on the flange, and a slight flange on the chorus, even if you've got the dials turned down to zero. Let's chalk this up to a good idea that works better on paper. If you can find it used, don't pay more than $60 for it. Just my two cents'!I played through a real Mistress from the '70s, so I guess you could say I have a hard time with this new digital box. I got rid of this only about a month after I bought it used (from someone else who obviously couldn't wait to get rid of it). Oh well, if you're curious, buy it but be prepared to return it (or keep it if it happens to be your thing!)
