Update #1 (03/26/2013): New bass arrived! Undamaged! But the washers around the tuning nuts were rattling this time...whatever. I'll get around to seeing if it even is something that should be addressed by my own tools (it probably is.) Since I can't leave well enough alone, I had ordered D'Addario ECB81-5 5-String Bass Guitar Strings, Light, 45-132, Long Scale, because I had heard all kinds of good things about flat wound strings. This is going to turn into a slight meta-review, so bear with me.The strings feel like heaven. If you've ever played with the stock strings on a (cheap? are the strings that come stock on this only found on cheap basses? Is that a common thing? wtf are those strings even called?!) bass, then you're familiar with the feeling of crazy ridges on the fatter strings. Flat wound strings do away with that - it's one smooth string the whole way down. Since everyone is currently sleeping, I have not been able to hear how they sound amplified, but it does definitely sound less harsh/metal.The problem is that the particular strings I chose appear to have too fat of a gauge on the B string (I'm learning! yay!) - the fabric that wraps the last part of the string before the round thingy that keeps it from going through the bridge was too thick to actually fit through the hole in the bridge, which meant I had to perform surgery to the instrument with a rotary tool.In retrospect, this was probably overkill. The string itself also appears that it is too fat to fit into the stock ridges on the bridge and the nut. On the bright side, it's a $140 bass, and I went into this fully expecting to replace almost every part at some point in the name of Science. For those of you that are not contemplating this purchase based on how you can frankenstein this thing, it sounds perfectly fine stock. But seriously, your fingers will thank you if you can acquire a set of flat wound strings that fit correctly.Original Review:I'm a seriously novice bass player, so don't expect me to say anything useful regarding how this plays/sounds compared to a better/worse product; this is a bass. It makes bass noises. It appears to hold a tune, even though it was damaged during shipping. If you read any reviews for any other bass on Amazon, you'll likely see at least one review lamenting the lack of package protection, and this is not any different - the knob nearest to the bridge was hit so hard during shipping that it broke the body of the bass in this area. This knob no longer turns, but the knob above it does. I was able to hook the bass up to my PA system and make even louder bass noises, so at least there's that. Everything else appears to be where it should be, and worked as expected. Since I just received the bass today, I'll be updating the review once my replacement gets here - hopefully without damage this time.

I bought a Dean Edge 09 Bass, 5 String last April and I've used it everyday since I got it. I used to play guitars but I decided to play bass for our band since no one wanted to play bass so that makes me kind of a beginner. We've been playing for more than a year now and this is the 2nd bass I've used. I have not changed anything in it. I used it straight from the box and it surely gives us the sound we desire. I previously owned a Rogue LX200B Series II and now this bass simple serves as a backup bass. I would say, I got my money's worth for this purchase.
