When I purchased my furnace a couple of years ago, it had a MERV 16 filter installed. Very costly ($100 locally) and needed replacement every six months. I went in search of a non-OEM filter, but with no luck. I then searched for an explanation of MERV factors. Long story short is that a MERV 16 is for CLEAN AIR ROOMS! A MERV 13 filters everything the MERV 16 does with the exception of cigarette smoke. We are non-smokers so the choice was easy and at half the price!
